J Wilson

“Liberty Transatlantic from Barcelona”

Mr J Wilson visited on 11/12 and did not recommend this ship

We are regular cruisers and Diamond status on Royal Caribbean. We have taken a couple of Westbound Transatlantic cruises before, due to liking to holiday in Florida in November. We were attracted by the itinerary of this sailing, a flight to Barcelona then 3 ports in mainland Spain and 2 in the Canaries before the 7 day crossing to Fort Lauderdale.
We had not sailed on the Freedom class before but know the Voyager class well. We found the extra size of the Liberty to be a disadvantage. While there are many more cabins and therefore passengers, the Main Dining room, Windjammer buffet and Theatre seem to be no bigger. Hence queues for breakfast and lunch in all venues plus a need to reserve places at the big shows. The Cruise Director, accustomed to 7 night trips, seemed ill prepared for a 14 night cruise and the daytime and evening activities were limited.
Disembarkation was a nightmare as there is a lot of clearance needed when the ship has been out of the US for 6 months. When we finally got landside the Customs and Immigration queue was still endless.
We are looking at a Westbound Transatlantic cruise again for 2013. The Independance is sailing out of Southampton, very tempting, but I think we may just go for a slightly smaller ship, Celebrity Eclipse.
