The pretty city of Bergen, a former capital, is surrounded by seven hills. The city sights, such as the fish market, the funicular and Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of colouful wooden houses, are easily explored on foot. Bergen’s proximity to Sognefjord, the second largest fjord in the world, makes it a great starting point for exploring the western fjords.
Selected cruises will depart from Oslo, giving you the opportunity to explore some of the city’s excellent museums. One of the fjords most scenic areas begins in Geiranger. From there, you can sail through Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home of the stunning Seven Sisters Falls.
Other ports include picturesque Flam, where we recommend taking the Flam Railway up through the valley for incredible views. The usually-early-morning approach to Flam through Sognefjord is well worth setting your alarm for. There is also Alesund, an attractive fishing port on the west coast, and Stavanger, home to a lovely harbor lined with restaurants.
