The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, located 62 miles off the coast of Morocco. With their sub-tropical climate, beautiful beaches and varied landscapes, they are a perennial favourite for British holiday makers. Their year-round sunshine also means they are ideal whatever the season.

Tenerife, the largest and liveliest of the islands, is known for the UNESCO-listed Teide National Park. There you’ll find Spain’s highest mountain - climb to the top or take the cable car for impressive vistas. Lanzarote is the most easterly, and boasts black sand beaches and lava fields, whilst Gran Canaria is green and luscious in the north, completely mountainous further down, and fringed by picturesque beach.

Head in a north easterly direction and you’ll discover the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago of nine islands. The scenery on San Miguel, the largest of the islands, is simply stunning.

Hike to Lagoa do Fogo, a crater lake at the centre of the island, visit the pretty city of Ribeira Grande, admire the sparkling twin lakes of Sete Cidades, or take a soak in the soothing hot springs at Caldeira Velha.
