The canal is the busiest waterway in the world, and also one of the most historic. Travelling through gives guests a unique, up-close look at a man-made wonder that makes for the trip of a lifetime.
The Canal was built by the Americans from 1904-1913 and opened in August of 1914. It was later transferred to Panama in 1999. The Canal has helped to enhance relations between the United States and Latin America, and also boosted the region’s economy.
A highlight of any Panama Canal cruise is visiting scenic Lake Gatun, a large artificial lake surrounded by nature reserves, which forms part of the Canal. The area is home to over 100 species of animals. You may also visit Colon, where you can take the train along the coast to Panama City and back in around two-and-a-half hours.
Fully traversing the Canal can take around 20 hours, though not all cruises fully transit. Some will enter the first set of locks, turn around in Gatun Lake and then exit back the way they came.
